It is not often that you find yourself all set to start university and suddenly a couple of weeks later you are a professional footballer. That is exactly what happened to Chris Smalling though. Loughborough University were looking forward to welcome Chris before he was contacted by Roy Hodgson, the then manager of Fulham for a trial. Smalling was playing for Maidstone United at the time and his rise to the top could not have been faster. Smalling made his debut for the club in a Europa League fixture away in Moscow and such was the quality of his performance, the then manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, swooped in to sign him. Chris has not looked back since, becoming a regular for Manchester United and sometimes captaining the side. He has also represented England on numerous occasions including at the recent UEFA EURO Championships in France.
