When Gareth Bale headed past Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to score in extra time of the 2014 UEFA Champions League final, his fairytale story had reached a new and most remarkable peak. Here was a man who only five years earlier was struggling to make an impact at Tottenham Hotspur, with the club considering selling their young Welsh prospect. But the explosive winger worked relentlessly to prove his worth and a few short years later – after a meteoric rise to stardom at White Hart Lane – he became the world's most expensive footballer. Chasing a historic tenth UEFA Champions League title, Madrid leaned on Bale's pace and aggression, and in the Lisbon final of 2014, it was the Welshman's goal – a stooping header at the far post – that put Real in front and inspired the team to a 4-1 win. In his first full season with the club, Bale had helped Madrid defeat their city rivals and finally capture La Decima.
