24th January 1942 — 12th January 2026
Edward Freedman
Founder & Former Chairman of IconsIt's with great sadness that I have to say that Icons' founder and Chairman, Edward Freedman, passed away peacefully in January 2026. He was 84 and had battled cancer for a while.
His funeral was full of friends he'd made from the world of sport. What was noticeable was that everyone had a story about Edward that reflected his passion, enthusiasm and above all his humanity. He loved his family, friends and football and lived his long life to the fullest.
I remember being with him at the 2018 World Cup England semi final and he casually mentioned that he was at Wembley in '66 and Turin in '90. We wondered if anyone else in the world was at all three.
He truly was the original Icon.

Most would assume the 2011 League Cup Final and that famous Obafemi Martins winner. But it was earlier in that same run: the quarter-final against Villa. Nikola Zigic's last-minute goal gave a real sense that something special was possible. Honourable mention to Brugge away in the Europa League the following season, Chris Wood's 110th-minute winner in front of the Blues fans.
Sheldon Royals' top scorer for three consecutive seasons until ligament damage cut the run short. These days it's back to basics: kicking a ball around the Icons car park, using industrial bins as goals and occasionally the warehouse roof. Now an up-and-coming manager, sitting 12th in the Premier League with Birmingham City and quietly pushing for a top-ten finish in their first season back in the top flight. Remember the name.

Dava Gordon
Dava Gordon
Dava specialises in maintaining and improving the Icons website — which is a polite way of saying he stops things breaking, fixes them when they do, and occasionally introduces new problems in the name of "features." Most of his time is spent battling bugs, optimising systems and making sure the site doesn't collapse the second real customers arrive. Think of it as digital firefighting — but the fire is invisible, and sometimes he started it three days ago.
A Computer Science MSc graduate from John Moores University in Liverpool, Dava has over 20 years in software development. Before Icons, he was a Lead Developer on high-traffic e-commerce platforms, where he developed a strong ability to stay calm while everything around him was very much not. He has AuDHD, which he describes as accidental time travel — sitting down for "five minutes" and suddenly it's tomorrow and he's warp-speed optimised a database query that wasn't even slow.
Briefly played for Everton Young Boys as a kid, until a fight with a car ended his playing career. In hindsight, that was the origin story — he stopped trying to stop goals and started stopping bugs, which he's significantly better at and requires less running.
Having spent more time with stack traces than Sky Sports lately, Dava's current football knowledge is cached but not refreshed.
Linus Torvalds — a far greater impact on Dava's life than any centre-forward, and his work has crashed fewer systems.
A production server hitting 100% CPU during a flash sale. Adrenaline, panic, rapid decision-making — absolute cinema. They survived. He's counting it as a world-class save.
That exact moment when a bug that's made no sense for hours suddenly clicks. Everything lines up, the fix works, the deploy goes out, nothing breaks. His 90th-minute winner — except instead of a crowd cheering, it's just him staring at the logs thinking finally.
A goalkeeper in the early 90s until injury forced an early retirement. Has since transitioned into a career preventing issues instead of diving at them — much more efficient and significantly fewer bruises. Still undefeated against production bugs on the good days.
