Roberto Baggio

They called him "Il Divin Codino" or "The Divine Ponytail". After all, all the best footballers get a nickname. Though Roberto Baggio may be forever remembered for his missed penalty in the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup final, that singular and most famous moment of pure anguish belies the Italian's immense standing in the game. Those who know Calcio know Baggio was one of the best strikers to have ever played the position. His genius is perhaps forgotten by the majority of the world but those who have stood in line to praise the man from the Venetian north east of Italy will attest to his evergreen power, his movement, his vision and, perhaps above all, his deadly finishing. If not plagued by injury, Baggio's 22-year-long career would have surely proffered more than his eventual tally of nearly 250 goals in over 500 appearances at the highest level. Former Fiorentina manager Aldo Agroppi said it best: "The angels sing in his legs."
