Current World Cup holders Italy are the second most successful national team of all time. Their 2006 triumph in Germany was their fourth World Cup victory, putting them just one win behind Brazil, who have five. The Azzurri triumphed twice in the 1930s but had to wait until 1982 to win the trophy again. They did it in style with victories over Argentina, Brazil and West Germany. If 1982 was their finest hour, 2006 was certainly their most emotional. Fresh from match-fixing scandals which had tarnished the name of Italian football, captain Fabio Cannavaro put a smile back on the face of a nation by lifting the trophy after defeating France in a dramatic final.
