In 1972 Rangers reached their third European final to beat Dynamo Moscow 3-2.
It was a fantastic display and a deserved win by Rangers, with goals coming from Colin Stein and Willie Johnson (2) giving them into a 3-0 headstart. Although Moscow came back into the game, it was not enough; and infront of 24,700 fans in the Camp Nou, Rangers collected their prize.
Although Moscow complained that a pitch invasion by Rangers fans one minute before the final whistle reduced their momentum and hindered their chances of getting a late equaliser, nothing could overshaddow Rangers' great triumpth.
On route to the final Rangers beat top European sides Stade Rennais, Sporting Lisbon, Torino and Bayern Munich.
Rangers only lost once on the way to the final; a 4-3 defeat away at Sporting Lisbon, having beaten Lisbon 3-2 at home in the previous leg, Rangers went through on away goals.
Apart from this defeat Rangers drew every away game 1-1 and the formula of drawing your away games, and winning your home games in European competition is one that is still very much in practice today.
