Paolo Maldini is the ultimate one-club legend. The iconic left-back played at the very top of his profession for a staggering 25 seasons, captaining AC Milan to five European Cups and seven Serie A titles. With 126 international appearances to his name, he is also the most capped player in Italy’s history. To put it simply, Maldini is one of football’s true greats.
Maldini and AC Milan, the club he joined as a 10-year-old, enjoyed a long and glorious relationship. Maldini made his first team bow aged 16, way back in January 1985. By the following season, the elegant and 6ft 1 left-back had established himself as a first team regular. Maldini’s first piece of silverware was the 1987-89 Serie A title, and in the 90s he became an integral member of a famous and long-standing Milan back four along with Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti.
A superb defender with excellent positional awareness and fantastic leadership abilities, ‘Il Capitano’ was a remarkably consistent presence in the Milan team for a quarter of a century. He retired from international in football in 2002 after competing with Italy in the fourth World Cup of his career, but for Milan he had a long way still to go. He captained AC Milan to the fifth European Cup win of his career in 2007, and didn’t hang up his boots until May 2009, at the age of 41.
