There's a reason why Marc Overmars was nicknamed 'Roadrunner'. Over the course of a decade of pure success and stellar performances, very few defenders were wily enough to get anywhere near him. The flying Dutchman made a name for himself as a pacey wideman in his homeland, playing for Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II and finally Ajax, where he really came to global attention.
Marc was a key part of the legendary Ajax side that won the 1995 Champions League, joined on the teamsheet by the likes of Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf - the spine of the Holland team of the next decade. After firing the Amsterdam outfit to three successive Eredivise titles, he joined Arsenal in a £5.5 million move - huge money at the time.
He went on to repay the fee in surplus. Under Arsene Wenger, Overmars won Arsenal's first ever Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998. He is fondly remembered in North London for his winning goal at Old Trafford that helped wrestle the league title from Manchester United's grip.
Another big money move was to follow, as Overmars moved to Barcelona in 2000 for around £25 million, which made him the most expensive Dutch player in history. The transfer was also unique in that he was the first player to announce a transfer via his website (a website which was built by our people here at Icons!). His time in Spain was less successful. Despite regularly performing well, he failed to win any major honours in a time viewed as a downturn in fortunes for the Catalans.
At international level Marc was known across Europe as one of the trickiest wingers in the game. He played 86 goals for Holland, scoring 17 times and was the youngest player to earn 50 caps, too. Sadly, his career was curtailed by injury, but his legend will forever live on.
