Kenny Dalglish was one of those rare talents who became a legend at more than one club. At Celtic and Liverpool FC he won trophies by the bucketload, while as a manager at Liverpool and Blackburn, he was equally successful. Only as manager of Newcastle was he unable to work his magic.

Dalglish signed for Celtic in May 1967 and remained there for ten years until his departure in August 1977. After some difficulty in breaking through to a side that had just become the first British side to win the European Cup, he slowly established himself as an essential part of the team. He made 269 appearances and scored 167 goals for the Bhoys.
In August 1977 he signed for Bob Paisley's Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £440,000. He quickly became the focal point of the side, replacing Kevin Keegan in the number 7 shirt, and spurred the side on to success both domestically and in Europe.
In 1985 after the Heysel Stadium disaster, such was his standing within the club he was the obvious choice to take over as manager when Joe Fagan resigned. He continued to inspire the club to unparalleled success until the stresses engendered by the Hillsborough tragedy cause him to resign.
After some time out to recharge his batteries, Dalglish was persuaded to accept the challenge of returning Blackburn Rovers to the top flight of English football for the first time since 1966. It was a challenge he rose to, and back by Jack Walker's millions, he turned them into a title-winning side.
Feeling he could take Rovers no further, his next challenge was taking over the reins at Newcastle United in January 1997. It was the second time in his career he was stepping into Kevin Keegan's shoes. Despite guiding Newcastle to second place in the Premiership in his first season at the helm, and masterminding a memorable 3-2 victory over Barcelona, he was sacked only two games into the 1998-99 season.
