Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish was born on March 4, 1951 in Glasgow. He grew up in the Govan district of the city near to Ibrox and despite growing up a Rangers fan in a Protestant family he signed for arch rivals, the Catholic-supported Celtic after unsuccessful trials at West Ham United and Liverpool.
The story goes that when the Celtic assistant manager Sean Fallon turned up at his house to ask him to sign a provisional contract the young Dalglish, upon hearing the knock at the door, frantically tore down all the Rangers posters from his bedroom.
Dalglish made his competitive Celtic debut in a Scottish League Cup quarter-final on September 25, 1968 helping the Bhoys to a 4-2 victory. But it took him a while to become a regular in a talented side that had been crowned champions of Europe in 1967 and it wasn't until August 14, 1971 that he scored his first competitive goal for the club.
Almost inevitably it came against his boyhood idols Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox. It was the first of 23 goals that season, and the following year he notched an incredible 41 goals. His growing stature and influence was recognised when he became club captain in the 1975-75 season.
But Dalglish's time at the club was coming to an end. After winning five Scottish championships, four Scottish Cup medals and one Scottish League Cup medal he needed a fresh challenge.
It was then that, much to the disappointment of the green and white hoops, Liverpool came knocking.
