Matt Le Tissier

Matt Le Tissier is a new face at Icons, and we couldn't be happier to have him on board. A wonderful dribbler with excellent poise and ball control, Le Tissier  was among the most gifted English players of his generation. He rejected opportunities to move to bigger clubs to stay at Southampton for the duration of his career.

Le Tissier scored 162 goals in 443 games for the south coast club. A remarkable strike rate considering Southampton's relatively low stature and limited resources. Le Tissier never played outside of the top flight, and it was thanks to his goals that Southampton were able to avoid relegation on so many occasions.

Le Tissier had a penchant for scoring wonderful solo goals. One of his finest came during the 1994/95 season, when his dipping 40-yard drive against Blackburn Rovers was named Match of the Day Goal of the Season. That season was the highest-scoring of his career; he netted 30 goals in 49 games.

Despite excelling so consistently for the Saints, Le Tissier won only eight caps for England, and never scored. His nadir came when he was controversially overlooked for the 1996 World Cup squad by Glenn Hoddle. It was the last nail in the coffin of his England career. HIs talent was sadly wasted at international level, but 'Le God', as he was known to adoring Southampton fans, was one of the most exciting players of the 90s. His goals will live long in the memory.
